Tatyana Kazankina wins 800m gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics
Athletics - 1976 Montreal Olympics - Womens 800m Final
The Soviet Unions Tatyana Kazankina (#340) approaches the line to win the gold medal in a new World Record of 1:54.94, with Bulgarias Nikolina Shtereva (#45), East Germanys Elfi Zinn (#168) and Anita Weiss (#166) and the Soviet Unions Svetlana Styrkina (352) behind in the Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Shtereva took the silver, Zinn the bronze, while Weiss was fourth and Styrkina fifth. The first four runners all broke the existing world record in the fastest 800m race to-date at that time.
Kazankina would also win the 1500m at the Montreal Games, and would defend that title in 1980. Her career came to an abrupt end in September 1984 when she refused to take a drug test and was banned for 18 months
