West German student Norbert Sudhaus runs round the stadium in a track uniform, initially fooling the officials and crowd, who began to cheer him, that he is about to win the race. He was not stopped until he had run round most of the track, prompting loud booing from the crowd that the real race leader, American Frank Shorter, believed was for him
