In 1965 he achieved a record unlikely to be beaten when he scored 2000 first class runs in a season without hitting a century. He made 135 first-class appearances for the county between 1959 and 1967.
He played rugby union for Sale, and later became a journalist for the Daily Telegraph covering cricket and rugby
