He made 293 first-class appearances for Lancashire between 1926 and 1945, scoring 16555 runs and 36 centuries. He played twenty tests for England between 1931 and 1939, his average of 59.23 is the fifth highest of all time, and second only to Sutcliffe amongst Englishmen
