Frances 41 year-old Raymond Poulidor at Lee Valley Park, East London (later site of the Olympic VeloPark).
He was know as the eternal second, because he finished the Tour de France in second place three times, and in third place five times, including his final Tour at the age of 40 the year before.
The event was organised by boxing promoter Mike Barrett and was was informally known as the Merckx Meeting as it attracted arguably the greatest cyclist of all time - Eddy Merckx - as well as other top riders from the continent.
