Kay managed Liverpool from 1936 to 1951. In his playing days he captained West Ham in the first Wembley FA Cup Final in 1923 against his former Club Bolton Wanderers. He became the first Englishman to captain the Irish league in a representative match while playing for Belfast Distillery
