The match was played following Norman Heaths forced retirement through injury. His career ended during a league match with Sunderland in 1954 when he was involved in a collision with Ted Purdon which resulted in severe back and neck injuries that confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. 55, 000 well-wishers turned up at the Hawthorns for the game
