He made 452 first-class appearances for the county between 1949 and 1964, scoring 20802 runs with 26 centuries, and a county record 555 catches. He was Lancashire captain in 1963 and 1964. He also played football as a goalkeeper for Wigan Athletic, Bury, Bolton and Stockport County
