The all-rounder made 397 first-class appearances for the county between 1923 and 1939, scoring 15519 runs, with 27 centuries, and taking 672 wickets.
He played two tests for England in the 1934 Ashes series. He holds the record for bowling the most deliveries (462) in test cricket without taking a wicket
