An emotional Olga Korbut of the Sovviet Union after a disastrous uneven bars routine cost her a medal in the individual competition in the Sports Hall, Olympic Park, Munich, West Germany. Her open display of tears captivated the Munich audience and endeared her to millions watching on television around the world.
At the 1972 Games the 17 year-old Korbut won gold medals in the balance beam, floor exercises, and team event, and a silver in the uneven bars
