Cricket - 1947 season
Lancashires Harold Harry Makepeace, left, and Nigel Howard.
Makepeace played 487 first-class games for Lancashire between 1906 and 1930, scoring 25207 runs and making 42 centuries. He played four tests for England during the 1920/1 Ashes series. He is one of only twelve England Double Internationals for cricket/football (alongside his Lancashire and Everton teammate Jack Sharp). He won the FA Cup with Everton alongside Sharp, and gained four England football caps.
Howard captained Lancashire between 1949 and 1953, and led England in four tests on the 1951/2 Tour of India, the last amateur to do so
