Athletics - 1972 Munich Olympics - Men's 100m Semi-Finals Heat One
The USSR's Valeriy Borzov leads the race, with West Germany's Jobst Hirscht straining just behind in the Olympiastadion, Munich, West Germany. Also pictured, from left to right, are Jamaica's Michael Fray, Trinidad and Tobago's Hasely Crawford, and France's Alain Sarteur.
Borzov, Crawford, Hirscht and Fray all qualified for the final, where Borzov won the gold. Three days later the Soviet also won gold in the 200m final, his favoured event, and became the first non-American since 1928 to complete the sprint double
