The USSRs Vladimir Salnikov wins the gold medal in the 1500m, finishing in 14:58.27 in the Swimming Pool of the Olimpiysky Sports Complex, Moscow, USSR, and becoming the first man to swim the distance under 15 minutes.
He won two more gold medals in the 4 x 200m relay and in the 400m, both freestyle
