The opening batsman played 370 first-class games for the county between 1914 and 1932, scoring 20142 runs with 52 centuries. He played two Tests for England.
In 1928 he scored 1000 runs in May alone, a feat only previously achieved by WG Grace in 1895, and Wally Hammond in 1928, and never matched since
