The USSRs Valeriy Borzov leads the race, with West Germanys Jobst Hirscht straining just behind in the Olympiastadion, Munich, West Germany. Also pictured, from left to right, are Jamaicas Michael Fray, Trinidad and Tobagos Hasely Crawford, and Frances Alain Sarteur.
Borzov, Crawford, Hirscht and Fray all qualified for the final, where Borzov won the gold. Three days later the Soviet also won gold in the 200m final, his favoured event, and became the first non-American since 1928 to complete the sprint double
