The event was organised by boxing promoter Mike Barrett and was was informally known as the Merckx Meeting as it attracted arguably the greatest cyclist of all time - Eddy Merckx - as well as other top riders from the continent.

Race winner and new World Champion Jean-Pierre Monsere of Belgium, centre, with silver medalist Leif Mortensen of Denmark, left, and bronze medalist Felice Gimondi of Italy, right, at Mallory Park, Leicester.
Monsere, aged 21, was then the second-youngest world champion. Tragically he was killed the next year when he collided with a car during a race.
