Kip Keino and Jim Ryun at the 1972 Munich Olympics

Athletics - 1972 Munich Olympics - Mens 1500m Round One Heat Four
Jim Ryun of the USA (#1008) with Kip Keino of Kenya (#576) in the Olympiastadion, Munich, West Germany.
Keino won the heat and went on to win the silver medal in the final. Ryun, a favourite for the gold, was clipped at 1, 000m by Ghanas Billy Fordjour, and both fell to the track. Ryun got up a few seconds later but was hopelessly behind and did not qualify for the semi-final. As he crossed the line, Keino met him and tried to console him. The US Olympic Committee appealed, claiming Ryun was tripped, but was rejected by the IOC and he was out of the competition
