1972 Munich Olympics - Men's 200m

Athletics - 1972 Munich Olympics - Men's 200m Final
The runners approach the bend in the Olympiastadion, Munich, West Germany. Left to right: East Germany's Siegfried Schenke (#344), the USA's Larry Burton (#976), the USSR's Valeriy Borzov (#932), West Germany's Martin Jellinghaus (#371), the USA's Chuck Smith (#1016), Italy's Pietro Mennea (#528), and the USA's Larry Black (#973).
Borzov dominated the final, winning the gold by almost two metres over Black who took silver, with Italy's Pietro Mennea finishing third. Borzov's win completed a 100m/200m double, the first sprinter from outside North America to achieve this. Fourth-place finisher Larry Burton later played for five years in the NFL as a wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers.

Tatyana Kazankina wins 800m gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics

Athletics - 1976 Montreal Olympics - Women's 800m Final
The Soviet Union's Tatyana Kazankina (#340) approaches the line to win the gold medal in a new World Record of 1:54.94, with Bulgaria's Nikolina Shtereva (#45), East Germany's Elfi Zinn (#168) and Anita Weiss (#166) and the Soviet Union's Svetlana Styrkina (352) behind in the Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Shtereva took the silver, Zinn the bronze, while Weiss was fourth and Styrkina fifth. The first four runners all broke the existing world record in the fastest 800m race to-date at that time.
Kazankina would also win the 1500m at the Montreal Games, and would defend that title in 1980. Her career came to an abrupt end in September 1984 when she refused to take a drug test and was banned for 18 months.
